Fun With Mythical Creatures Stencils (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1994)
Average review score:

Bold designsThere are six different stencils in this little book, printed on sturdy cardstock. They're perforated for easy removal, pre-cut, and neatly labeled. The designs are simple without being simplistic, and a perfect size for many projects. I've used them to make posters, to add color to bookcases, and just to draw on windows and mirrors with dry-erase markers. The creatures included are a mermaid, a minotaur, a unicorn, a griffin, a dragon, and a centaur.

Fun With Stars Stencils (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1993)
Average review score:

six basic designsThere are six star motif stencils here, cut into heavy laminated paper. All six are disconnected stencils, having separations between elements, an visually interesting look on a wall or furniture. All are approximately 3-and-a-half inches square, and three patterns are pictured on the book cover. They are a nice size for preschooler art projects, though these specific stencils seem like good candidates for quilting patterns. It's a good price for some basic stencils.

Fun With Sun, Star and Moon Stencils (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1991)
Average review score:

six very basic designsThere are six stencils here, cut into heavy laminated paper. Four are disconnected stencils, having separations between elements, particularly effective in wall or furniture stencilling. The specific stencils are: a star (approximately 4.5 inches high and 3 inches wide), a sun (3 inches long and 3 wide), a moon (3.5 by 3), a wavy sun (3.5 by 3), Saturn (3 by 3.5), and a shooting star (2.5 by 4.5). The moon, wavy sun and Saturn are pictured on the cover. They are a nice size for preschooler art projects but are unimaginative and probably not appropriately interesting for much else. Still, it's a good price for some basic stencils.

Great Poems by American Women: An Anthology (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1998)
Average review score:

For the SentimentalistsI bought this Dover Thrift knowing that I would at least like a few of the poems, and even one great poem would be worth a measly dollar. These are poems that speak of the greatness of America, or the treachery of slavery, or other such things that bring tears to your eyes if you don't fall asleep before its over. Now don't get me wrong, every poem in this book marks a great step for women in poetry, and all of the poems are good. For those who like surrealism and dreamlike imagery though (like me), this book is more worth buying for the poems such as: "Daddy" (S. Plath's jerking rendering of the thoughts of a half-Jew, half-German woman), "Bluebeard's Closet" (R. Cooke's portrayal of the horrors of the room filled with dead wives), and a few other such of the like. The title, "Great Poems by American Women" should read "Great First Poems by American Women". The great poems of more recent poets were awfully ignored in the making of this mediorce (but hey, not a bad trade for the price) anthology.

Happy New Year! and Other Stories (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 2000)
Average review score:

A wonderful gift itemThis inexpensive Dover book is a charming English compilation of eleven of Aleichem's tales. The majority are written in a first person stream-of-consciousness narrative and you definitely get the impression that someone is sitting in front of you talking your ear off! Peppered with cadence, I'm sure the tales are even better in Yiddish, but this is a wonderful look into Aleichem's true talent - showing the pain and humor that was part of the Jewish experience for hundreds of years.

Italian Lace Designs: 243 Classic Examples (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1993)
Average review score:

Truly inspirational!Although this book is devoid of any prickings, patterns, or line drawings it is worth owning just for the sheer number (243 to be exact) of beautiful, close-up photos of antique laces. The photographs are quite clear enough, I believe, that the advanced lacemaker should be able to replicate many of the laces. And the novice lacer, like me, will enjoy thumbing its pages and dreaming of future projects.

The Journey of Coronado (Dover Books on Travel, Adventure)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1990)
Average review score:

Collection of narratives from search for fabled Seven CitiesContains the main narrative of the Coronado expedition by Pedro de Castaneda, who was one of the soldiers on the expedition and wished to separate the stories being told from what really took place. The Seven Cities were supposedly a kingdom of riches and on the word of a friar an expedition was launched to seek them out and this relates what they went through, albeit very briefly. Also includes other letters and shorter accounts that all tell about the same story. Gets a lower rating than it probably should because I found the translation did not flow easily. It is also not nearly on par with the much more vivid accounts such as Conquest of New Spain about Cortez, the Relacion of Cabeza de Vaca, or La Florida about De Soto. Contains no maps but a great deal of endnotes.

L'Histoire De Jemima Cane-De-Flaque: Livre D'Histoires En Couleurs (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1995)
Average review score:

Puddle DuckA very cute story about a determined duck. The book's smallsize makes it easy to take along on travels but it makes it difficultto use as a coloring book.

LA Boheme Vocal Score (Dover Vocal Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 2000)
Average review score:

Get it if you can not afford any thing better...Okay. With no english translations at the bottom, how are you supposed to know what you are singing about? Get the G Schirmer version. Its much better. However, if this is all you can afford then I say by all means go for it.
